January 28 - Update 4:30 pm

The propane tanker was properly purged and removed from the site.

Response crews are assessing the area for any potential impacts, and cleaning up associated debris.

Ministry of Environment staff will continue to monitor the clean up.

The emergency phase has concluded. No further updates are anticipated for this incident.

The fire on the truck has been completely extinguished.

Overall, the tanker contained 11,000 litres of propane. It is estimated that the fire consumed 1,000 litres, and the remaining 10,000 litres has been successfully transferred from the impacted tanker.

The tanker still requires purging of residual vapours before it can be removed from the incident site.

Prairie Road remained closed to all traffic, and a 500 m isolation zone was maintained throughout operations.

An ENV Response Officer remained on site during the transfer operations.

ENV staff will continue to monitor the incident.

January 27 - Update 4:30 pm

An ENV Response Officer has arrived on the scene to assess, monitor and support the incident.

The propane tanker remains on fire due to the impacts from the MVI,  however, both the tank pressure and the fire’s intensity have decreased since this morning. 

A response specialist is on site conducting an assessment of the situation. Plans are being developed to control and extinguish the fire. Representatives from federal agencies have support the response planning.

Additional response crews are mobilizing from Prince George to support the incident. Crews will be able support fire suppression and the offloading of the remaining product.

Local residents are being allowed to return to their homes but are required to shelter in place.

January 27

On January 27, 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) received a report of a motor vehicle incident (MVI) north of Fort St. John in B.C.

The MVI occurred near the junction of Montney Road and Road 256. The incident involved a transport truck carrying 10,000 litres of propane.

The truck caught on fire. RCMP are at the scene and have isolated the incident area. Evacuations of nearby residents are ongoing, with the evacuation zone being extended to 1 mile around the incident site.

The Responsible Person for the incident is Peace River Propane. Peace River Propane have engaged their emergency response plan and mobilizing response crews from Alberta.

Local First Nations have been notified of the incident. The Peace River Regional District is aware of the ongoing incident and evacuations.

An ENV Response Officer is currently being deployed to the incident site.
