On October 9th, the Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) received a report that a B-train tanker had rolled over.  The incident happened on Highway 97, near kilometer 195, north of Wonowon, B.C.

The tanker was hauling roughly 50,000 liters of diesel. Current estimates indicate that up to 25,000 litres may have been released as a result of the incident.

The spilled material has been observed pooling on the north side of the highway. Further inspection will be required to determine if the diesel has migrated further. Absorbent booms have been deployed and other mitigation measures, such as under flow dams are being considered.

There is a creek approximately a kilometer north of the incident site that could be impacted if the spilled diesel migrates.

The responsible person has retained a Qualified Environmental Professional and a response contractor. The Qualified Environmental Professional is on site. The response contractor is expected to begin product transfer in the afternoon on October 10.

The highway currently remains open with single lane usage. There is traffic control on site. Temporary closures will be required during product removal.

An ENV Response Officer and Senior Response Officer are on site. ENV Recovery staff are providing support to the ENV Response staff that are on site.

Further updates will be provided when more information becomes available.
