September 23, 2026 - Special Edition
Good afternoon,
A provincial general election has been called in British Columbia. With writs issued, this signals the dissolution of British Columbia's Legislative Assembly and begins the interregnum period.
During this period, the B.C. Public Service, including staff within the Ministry of Education and Child Care, will operate under caretaker conventions. This means that the operational business of government will continue, with ministry staff continuing to work supporting you and your teams in helping students succeed. The Deputy Minister's Bulletin will also continue during the interregnum period, providing operational and regulatory updates relevant to school districts.
This special edition of the bulletin provides a timely reminder of the obligation of boards of education to make schools available as voting places, under the Election Act.
This week’s regularly scheduled Deputy Minister’s Bulletin will be released tomorrow.
Thank you for your continued partnership and leadership during this time.
Kaye Krishna
Deputy Minister
Ministry of Education and Child Care

Following the announcement yesterday that a provincial election has been called for October 24, 2026, Boards are reminded of their obligations under the Election Act, section 81(3)(a), to make schools available as voting places when requested by Elections BC. This may include for advance voting and voting on final voting day.
District Electoral Officers may be reaching out to districts regarding space in schools for voting for the provincial election. Please ensure that district staff responsible for facility bookings are aware of the requirement to make space available and are prepared to respond to requests from District Electoral Officers.
