Thinning study in Douglas fir at Cowichan Lake Research Station (EP 365)

Last updated on August 22, 2023

Introduction

This project was originally designed to complement the Correlated Cure Trend (CCT) experimental design project put forward by O’Connor in 1935 and incorporated into E.P.s 418, 469 and 554. However, the thinning schedule was not maintained.

Objectives

To apply a thinning prescription which will provide growth and yield data on the relationship between tree growing space and volume increment.

Treatments

The experiment was established in 1950 near Cowichan Lake in a 39 year old stand. The experiment consists of 6 plots (0.4ha) including an uncut control and 5 thinned plots representing a series of descending miangiture of density. There have been 3 thinnings (ages 39, 44 and 59).

Status

Last measured in 1988. Currently inactive.
