We are committed to supporting people with disabilities to meaningfully participate in their communities.

To support this, the Government of B.C. has passed accessibility legislation.

Accessible British Columbia Act implementation

There will be key actions in four different areas in years one through 10 of implementation.

Culture change

We will focus on culture change throughout. It means an emphasis on:

  • Ongoing awareness
  • Working closely with stakeholders and the public to help increase accessibility

Requirements for the B.C. government

Government is required to:

  • Build a tool to provide feedback to government
  • Develop government's accessibility plan
  • Establish the Provincial Accessibility Committee
  • Develop initial regulations prescribing organizations

Government will also release accessibility plans on a regular basis.

Monitoring and evaluation

Government reports each year on progress and success. The first independent review will occur after 5 years.

Standards development

Standards will be developed two at a time and will be implemented in a phased approach. As implementation begins for a standard, work will begin on developing the next one.

Accessibility regulation

Effective September 1, 2022, over 750 public sector organizations will be required to establish an accessibility committee, an accessibility plan and a build tool to receive feedback on their accessibility.
