Climate Based Seed Transfer Gaps Survey

Last updated on March 11, 2024

Seed planning is an important step in meeting British Columbia's forest stewardship and genetic resource management (GRM) objectives.

Seed planning under Climate Based Seed Transfer

Seed used in Crown land reforestation must meet the requirements set out in the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and its regulations, and in the Chief Forester's Standards for Seed Use. This will ensure regenerated stands are genetically diverse, adapted, healthy and productive, now and in the future.

On August 1st 2022, the Chief Forester's Standards for Seed Use removed Geographic Based Seed Transfer. In preparation for the full transition to Climate Based Seed Transfer (CBST), tree seed users are encouraged to work through the seed planning checklist and identify any gaps which could require an Alternative to the Chief Forester's Standards for Seed Use well in advance of any seedling request deadlines.

To anticipate any wild-stand sourcing or orchard seed gaps, the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch is asking tree seed users to participate in a survey
