B.C. is in the favorable position of owning 94 per cent of its land and forest resources which allows the province to determine where, when and how forest resources can be used. B.C. is a world leader in sustainable forest management with leading-edge environmental practices.
The Province of British Columbia is taking action to maintain the forest sector’s position as a driving force in B.C.’s economy, especially in rural communities. The forest sector is a critical economic generator for B.C. It supports healthy, stable communities, and provides jobs for tens of thousands of British Columbians.
The Province promotes innovation in the forest sector. Today wood fibre is converted into electricity, fuels, plastics, solvents and lubricants. Biomass is being explored as an alternative to fossil fuels. B.C. is a leader in the development of innovative wood products and construction techniques.
The market for B.C. wood products is diversifying. While the U.S. remains our number one market, China now accounts for almost 30 percent of lumber exports. Markets in Japan, Korea and India continue to grow. The Provincial Government will ensure B.C. is positioned to benefit as worldwide demands increase.
