This service is for organizations registered with the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP). It explains how to start a new criminal record check for the people they need to screen.

Fees

The person who needs the criminal record check is responsible for paying the criminal record check fee. However, you can pay for them. Fees aren't refundable.

Criminal record checks are free for volunteers in eligible volunteer organizations.

  • Certified cheque or money order payable to the Minister of Finance

Submit

There are 3 different ways to start a criminal record check

Option 1: Applicant-based service (Recommended)

This option lets applicants submit a criminal record check themselves. Your organization must be registered with the applicant-based service, and the applicant must have the BC Services Card app.

When you're ready, give the applicant:

Option 2: Organization-based service

With the organization-based service, your organization submits criminal record checks for applicants. The applicant can enter their information online or your organization can enter it on their behalf.

Option 3: Manual (Paper)

If you can't submit a criminal record check online, you can submit it manually. 

After you submit

Next steps

If the applicant is from outside Canada, you should ask them to get a criminal record check from their home country. You don't need to submit this to the CRRP.

Timelines

Criminal record checks usually take 2 to 3 weeks to process. It could take longer if:

  • The paperwork is incomplete
  • The applicant needs to submit fingerprints
  • The criminal record check shows an offence
  • The applicant's file needs adjudication (further review)

The applicant can work, volunteer or attend school while you wait for the results.
