Justice reform initiatives - governance

Following recommendations made in an independent review of British Columbia’s criminal justice system, government passed the Justice Reform and Transparency Act, which created a Justice and Public Safety Council to give strategic direction to justice transformation.

The act requires the Council to convene a Justice Summit at least once a year to create an environment where justice sector partners can work together to make positive change. The inaugural Summit, held in March 2013, brought together leaders from across the justice sector to discuss the values of the criminal justice system and to determine priorities for reform. The Summit identified these priorities in its Report of Proceedings, which also establishes the groundwork for future Summits.
