Equipment

Last updated on May 10, 2021

A growing number of specialized home modifications (e.g. grab bars, walk-in showers) and assistive devices (e.g. reachers, raised toilets) have been identified to play an important role in reducing the risk of falls and helping older adults maintain their independence within their home.

Assess your equipment needs by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Do I have difficulty performing activities of daily living such as getting dressed?
  • Do I have a chronic health condition that effects my mobility and/or balance?
  • Have I experienced an unexpected event that temporarily effected my mobility and/or balance?
  • Do I have difficulty getting up from your chair or toilet, or out of the bathtub?

If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, it is important to discuss these with a health care professional so that you can move about safely and avoid injury.

Studies have shown that hip protector garments (pdf) can reduce the incidence of hip fractures both in community dwelling seniors and those living in care facilities.

Suggestions

  • Occupational therapists can provide information about personal and environmental assessments to help make life easier and safer, as well as guidance on proper installation and use of equipment.
  • Contact your local community care program or home support service for information on assistance with showering, meals or other daily tasks.
  • Remove all obstacles and trip hazards from walk ways.
