Re: Protection of Interior Foam Foam Plastic Insulation, Article 9.10.16.12.

With reference to your letter of September 14, 1987, regarding exposed foamed plastic insulation on the interior of a boat building structure.

From the information supplied the building appears to fall under Part 9 of the Code, and is permitted to be of combustible construction, although in fact it is a steel building.

Under the circumstances Article 9.30.1.2. of the 1980 Building Code, or 9.10.16.12. of the 1985 Building Code apply. These do not permit the exposed foamed plastic, but require that it be protected by one of the interior finishes indicated.

We understand that there is also an issue involving the municipal occupancy bylaw, but this has not been taken into account, it is outside the jurisdiction of the Appeal Board.
