Re: Turbo Fire Stoves and Inserts

With reference to your letter of February 7, 1990, requesting approval of "Turbo*Fire" Pellet Stoves. The units fall under the category of space heaters in the British Columbia Building Code, and as such must comply with Article 9.34.2.1., which requires conformance with ULC S627/CSA B366.2 "Standard for Space Heaters for Use with Solid Fuels".

The information submitted indicates that the appliance under review has been tested and accepted by the Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada, who will list the unit and inaugurate a follow-up service. As ULC are a nationally accredited agency for carrying out this type of certification we consider that you require no further approval, as long as your listing is current. All installation instructions must comply strictly with the terms of the listing.

You request that we approve suggested installation configurations, but we must point out that this is not a function of the Appeal Board. The Building Code contains requirements for floor protection and for clearances; your units should be installed in compliance with these requirements, except that acceptable variations established under the ULC testing would take precedence over the provisions in the Code, only these variations permit any deviation from the Code.
