Re: Noncombustible Plumbing Fixtures, Sentence 3.1.4.5.(10)

With reference to your letter of October 27, 1989, regarding plumbing fixtures installed in the hospital. We understand that the building in question is classified as a B2 occupancy, any height, any area, and is unsprinklered; this brings it under the provisions of Article 3.2.2.26. which requires noncombustible construction.

You suggest that the plumbing fixtures are noncombustible, but as this status is achieved by no other acrylic products, the fact would require confirmation by testing to CAN S114 "Standard Method of Test for Determination of Noncombustibility in Building Materials".

If the fixtures are not noncombustible then Sentence 3.1.4.5.(10) applies, and Table 3.1.11.A. indicates a maximum flame spread rating of 75, which would apply to the plumbing fixtures as well as the walls. Sentence 3.1.10.1.(1) states that flame-spread ratings shall be determined on the basis of testing to CAN 4-S102.

We suggest that you reapproach the manufacturer, as there is nothing in the material submitted to support your contention that you comply with the Code.
