Re: Tapered Stair Treads, Sentence 3.3.1.15.(7)

With reference to your letter of July 12, 1989 regarding the application of Sentence 3.3.1.15.(7).

The stair requirements in Article 3.3.1.15. were developed on the concept of treads which were safe to use throughout their effective length. On this basis, in the case of tapered treads, we would take the required dimensions as applicable to the usable portion of the tread, any projection beyond these limits would have no bearing on safety.

At the end of a tread we would consider the run dimension as measurable at the junction with a wall or stringer, if this was how a tread terminated; in the case of a handrail supported on balusters, it would be the inside face of the baluster.
