Re: Asphalt Shingle Roof, Subsection 9.27.4.

With reference to your letter of November 1, 1988 regarding an asphalt shingle roof. While the letter refers to a replacement roof we would point out that this is no different to a new roof with respect to application of the Building Code.

The illustration submitted indicates a closed valley, and the specific requirements in Article 9.27.4.3. apply only to an open valley. However, Article 9.27.4.2. does apply, and requires that every valley be flashed, but gives no specific provisions for a closed valley. Under the circumstances trade practice for this particular type of location should apply. In this regard we would consider the latest recommendations of the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia to be acceptable, and from the limited information provided it appears that, except for an outdated valley detail, you are within these recommendations. If such is the case, we consider the installation to be acceptable for this specific feature.

The submission also included an outline representation of a roof, changing slope towards the eaves, with a question as to whether or not this met the Code. There is no indication of the particular point at issue, and no details to enable a decision to be made on any aspect of the diagram. We are therefore unable to assist until we receive adequate information.
