Sensitive Streams

Last updated on June 24, 2021

A sensitive stream designation protects fish populations that are at risk from damage to the stream's aquatic ecosystem.

Authority to divert and use water from a sensitive stream or from a well that is hydraulically connected to a sensitive stream may be granted, but with terms, conditions and restrictions applied.

From Fish Protection Act to Water Sustainability Act

Fifteen sensitive streams were originally designated under the Fish Protection Act. The Water Sustainability Act (WSA) maintains the sensitive stream designation on all 15 streams.
