B.C. Education Coaching Income Tax Credit
The B.C. education coaching tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit for teachers and teaching assistants who carry out at least 10 unpaid hours of extracurricular coaching activity in the tax year. The credit amount is $500, providing a tax benefit of up to $25.30. The credit is available for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 tax years.
You’re eligible to claim the tax credit if you:
- are a resident of B.C. on December 31 of the tax year,
- are a paid teacher or teaching assistant (including principal or vice principal) working in a qualifying school, and
- carry out at least 10 hours of unpaid work in a year to coach or supervise students of a qualifying school engaged in extracurricular activities.
The extracurricular activities must be performed after school hours or on a weekend, and can include sports, arts and many other activities, as long as the coaching or supervising is unpaid.
A qualifying school must offer educational programs for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, and includes:
- public schools
- francophone schools
- independent schools
- First Nations schools
Preschools do not qualify.
Claiming the Credit
You claim the credit when you file your T1 Income Tax Return. Enter the amount of the credit you are claiming on the British Columbia Tax form (BC428).
