Emergency management training opportunity

We are pleased to sponsor access to the following online Emergency Management courses for members of the ESS Community. A sponsored course means course fees are waived for ESS responders who have EM/ESS leadership approval to apply. These application instructions are for these courses only.

Application instructions

  • Submit one application per course
  • On each application, specify the course code and course dates being requested
  • Completion of prerequisites is a requirement where indicated
  • Upon submission of the application, you will receive a receipt for your records
  • The application receipt is a notification. It does not equal a confirmation of enrollment. Confirmation of enrollment is sent from JIBC by email

JIBC ESS Application

 

EMRG–1100 Introduction to Emergency Management in Canada: 2 weeks to complete

Delivery: Self-paced online, 3–7 hrs

This self-paced online course allows you to progress through the content at your own pace, and takes approximately 3-7 hours to complete. Students will learn the basic concepts and structure of emergency management in Canada. Explore the framework, principles and components involved in effectively managing emergencies or disasters, whether in a government, community agency, industry, or business context.

This course is beneficial to anyone with an interest or involvement in emergency management, and serves as a prerequisite course for many of the other JIBC Emergency Management Division courses.

EMRG–1143 Psychosocial Resilience in Disasters: 4 weeks to complete

Course Prerequisites: EMRG–1100-Introduction to EM
Delivery: Self-paced online, 14 hours

This self-paced online course allows you to progress through the content at your own pace, and takes approximately 14 hours to complete. Students will explore an overview of the psychosocial needs of emergency management personnel and communities before, during, and after disasters, as well as strategies and resources to support psychosocial resilience (e.g., self-care, worker care). This course also discusses stress responses, vulnerable populations, resiliency toolkits, and risk and resiliency factors.

EMRG–1200 Incident Command System Level 100: 2 Weeks to complete

Delivery: Self-paced online, 3–7 hrs

Students will be introduced to an effective incident site management system for command, control, and coordination of response at an emergency site. Gain a basic understanding of the Incident Command System, its organization, principles, basic structure and common responsibilities. This course is the first in a series of ICS training courses and will be of particular interest to first responders and those who have a site-support role in an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

ESS director course

The current version of the in-person ESS Director course is postponed until further notice. A hybrid (online/virtual) course offering is under development for release in Spring of 2021. Registration opens 6 weeks prior to the course start date. Registration information will be sent out through the EMBC regional offices.
