Over the years, there have been a variety of products sold that were guaranteed to clean your chimney. These products took the form of powders or special logs. The validity of the product claims would be hard to verify. A good hot fire every day would be as beneficial.
With the rise in home energy costs, there will be another return to wood burning appliances, along with an increase in chimney fires because of improper installation or maintenance.
There will also be an increase of products available for “cleaning” chimneys. It is buyer beware as some products may damage a chimney lining.
These products are not regulated by the British Columbia Fire Code.
The British Columbia Fire Code, Sentence 184.108.40.206.(2), requires that chimneys, flues or flue pipes shall be cleaned as often as necessary to keep them free from dangerous accumulations of combustible deposits.
The best way to clean a chimney is by pulling the proper size brush through the flue.
