Major Project Contacts for the Skeena Region
The Skeena region encompasses a vast and resource-rich area of northwest B.C. There is a diverse array of landscapes ranging from islands and inlets on the north coast to the sub-boreal forests and mountains of the Yukon boundary area.
The major natural resource industries in the region currently include forestry and mining. There is also an emerging clean energy sector with several hydroelectric, wind energy and transmission projects planned or under construction.
Although much of the region is sparsely populated, there is a well-developed service sector along the Highway 16 corridor. The main northern transportation route, Highway 37, connects Whitehorse and Yukon with Highway 16 between Terrace and Smithers. The CN Railway parallels Highway 16 and terminates at the major port of Prince Rupert. Other ports exist at Kitimat and Stewart.
