George focuses on the scientific, technical, market, and economic aspects of specialty metals, industrial minerals, and gemstones on behalf of the British Columbia Geological Survey.

Expertise

From 1978 to 1990, George held exploration and applied research positions with Iron Ore of Canada, Atomic Energy of Canada, Canada Talc Industries, and as an independent geological consultant. In 1990, he joined the British Columbia Geological Survey (BCGS) as an Industrial Minerals Geologist. Since 2004, his responsibilities also include critical and specialty materials (including those used in manufacturing of batteries, magnets and photovoltaic devices).

George has been active in several professional organizations, such as the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy where he has held the roles of secretary and treasurer, vice-president, president, special publications representative, and member of the environmental committee for the Industrial Minerals division. He has also organized or been a committee member for several Forums on the Geology of Industrial Minerals. He co-edited “Industrial Minerals in Canada” (CIM-Special Volume 53), “Industrial Minerals with Emphasis on Western North America”, and the proceedings of “Critical and Strategic Materials” (Victoria, 2015). He is credited with more than 200 technical, market-oriented, and scientific papers in the fields of Critical Materials and Industrial Minerals. 

In addition, George was a Science Leader of the Specialty Metals component of the Targeted Geoscience Initiatives 4 and 5 (from 2010 to 2020), a joint effort between Natural Resources Canada and BCGS. He has taught a short course on Industrial Minerals and Specialty Metals to prospectors and is an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria where he supervises graduate students in the domains of ore deposits and related exploration methodologies
