General marketing is required to sell any product regardless of the marketing outlet. A general marketing plan identifies market trends, competitors, customer feedback, sales targets, pricing and cost of production.


There are two main types of commodity products regulated under the BC Natural Products Act:

  1. Supply Managed Commodities
  2. Central Selling Desks

Supply Managed Commodities are typically livestock while the Central Selling Desks focus on produce.


Direct marketing is popular with small and medium sized farms that are able to capture the full value of their product by selling to the end customer. Direct marketing can also include farmers markets, on-line, phone or road side sales, as well as selling wholesale.
