Dental practitioners who are licensed by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia (CDSBC) are eligible to enroll with MSP and obtain MSP billing numbers. Visit the dentists MSP site for more information. 

For the purposes of the Laboratory Services Regulation, a dentists is a referring practitioner if they are enrolled as a practitioner under section 13 of the Medicare Protection Act and they are a registrant of the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia and authorized to use the title:

  • “dentist”,
  • “dental surgeon”,
  • “surgeon”, or
  • “doctor”.

Dentists may refer beneficiaries to an approved laboratory facility for prescribed fee-for-service (FFS) outpatient laboratory services (benefits) listed in the Laboratory Services Schedule of Fees, provided the service falls within their scope of practice for medically required laboratory services for beneficiaries. 

Dentists should refer to the full Laboratory Services Payment Schedule for a comprehensive list of outpatient laboratory tests and for additional fee item detail, including limits and conditions as well as notations where add-on tests may be conducted by the laboratory facility. Dentists may also refer for other non-FFS laboratory services within their scope of practice.
