Indigenous Procurement Initiative

The B.C. government is committed to true and lasting reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Under the BC Procurement Strategy, the Province aims to reduce barriers to government’s procurement opportunities and better support participation by Indigenous businesses and communities. The Indigenous Procurement Initiative (IPI) aims to create culturally appropriate procurement practices, an Indigenous-specific procurement strategy, and help build capacity for Indigenous businesses, communities and government employees. Recommendations on specific actions will be developed and implemented in collaboration with Indigenous partners across the province

What has been achieved so far?

Engagement with Indigenous partners and businesses

With advice from Indigenous partners, the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) and the Ministry of Citizens’ Services (CITZ) undertook engagement across the province. The engagement process, including regional sessions, in-depth conversations and an online survey, was designed to provide Indigenous partners, organizations, businesses, communities, women, youth and Elders with a range of opportunities to share their input about government procurement.

The input received from more than 300 Indigenous partners, organizations, community representatives, business owners and others around the province has been recorded and reflected in the Report on What We HeardIt is clear from what was heard that continued collaboration and engagement should form the foundation of government's approach to building a procurement approach that will better benefit Indigenous businesses and communities throughout B.C..

What will happen next?

Laying the foundation for continued collaboration and engagement

IPI will lay the foundation for continued collaboration and engagement to support and inform the development and implementation of recommendations to address what has been heard through engagement.

This foundation includes:

  • Creating a dedicated project office to support the initiative
  • Establishing an external advisory committee on the development and implementation of specific short-, medium-, and long-term actions
  • Delivering cultural competency training to B.C. Government employees who deliver procurement
  • Establishing or building upon existing Indigenous business directories
