Become a Carbon Neutral Municipality
Under the B.C. Climate Action Charter, local governments have committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and moving towards carbon neutrality.
Carbon Neutral Projects
To become carbon neutral, municipalities can identify carbon offset projects that will reduce GHG emissions to offset their carbon “liability”. As decomposing organic matter releases methane into the environment, banning organics (like kitchen scraps and yard trimmings) from landfills is one step towards becoming carbon neutral.
Develop Organics Bylaws
Under the Environmental Management Act, regional districts may make bylaws to regulate the management of municipal solid waste or recyclable material.
