Natural Resource C&E Actions

The B.C. government strives to ensure compliance with environmental regulatory requirements. This is achieved through the use of a variety of compliance tools, giving consideration to using the most appropriate tool necessary to obtain compliance, and when required, to promote general deterrence.

When considering how to respond to non-compliance, officials consider the severity of actual or potential impact to the environment, human health or safety, the factual circumstances of the alleged offence, the compliance history of the offender, as well as how to achieve the best environmental outcome and reduce the likelihood of repeat offences. In some cases, progressive sanctions are used when previous enforcement actions have been ineffective.
