Alien invasive species

Last updated on October 28, 2021

Alien invasive species do not occur naturally in ecosystems in B.C. Their threat to the province's agriculture, forestry and environment is serious – they can:

  • Disrupt natural ecosystem processes
  • Alter soil chemistry to prevent the regrowth of native plants and economic crops
  • Increase soil erosion
  • Poison livestock and wildlife
  • Increase risk of wildfires
  • Interfere with forest regeneration
  • Cause allergic reactions, severe skin abrasions and burns
