National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) is Canada's premier innovation assistance program for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is a vital component of the NRC, a cornerstone in Canada's innovation system, regarded world-wide as one of the best programs of its kind. 

IRAP helps firms to develop technologies and successfully commercialize them in a global marketplace through:

Industrial technology advisors support their clients' projects through all stages of the innovation process.

IRAP provides funding to qualified firms and their innovative research and development projects.

Through national and international networks, industrial technology advisors connect their clients with industry experts and potential.

IRAP support their clients hire of recent graduates to innovative projects in research, development and the commercialization of technologies.

Special Requirements 

In order to be considered for possible NRC IRAP funding, firms must:

  • be a small or medium-sized enterprise in Canada, incorporated and profit-oriented;
  • have 500 or fewer full-time equivalent employees; and

  • have the objective to grow and generate profits through development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven new or improved products, services, or processes in Canada.
