Description

Surrey School District has emphasized building capacity in our teachers as a priority. Within several initiatives this year, we have selected the following professional development format. May 5, 2017 a group of Surrey French Immersion teachers grades 3-11 in addition to some from surrounding Districts, attended a professional learning day where Tom Morton, University of British Columbia (UBC) professor and co-author of the "Big Six Historical Thinking Concepts" facilitated this session in French. Teachers participated in hands-on examples of learning situations corresponding to the social studies curriculum, integrating aboriginal perspectives, using authentic documents and critical thinking strategies. Core competencies were also part of the instructional strategies for this day. This day was presented in collaboration with the Aboriginal Education department and Immersion teachers experienced an authentic aboriginal context as part of their learning. In order to deepen their professional learning, Tom Morton will conduct model lessons in various classrooms in September and October 2017. Several teachers will observe and participate in each of these sessions.

Outcome

Following this initiative, various teachers modified their teaching strategies and assessments. Student voice and critical thinking has begun to be prioritized in various classrooms. There is evidence that classroom discussions have become deeper and more meaningful and some teachers will embark upon team teaching formats for the upcoming school year. This initiative has been successful and continues to have a lasting  impact in and beyond the classroom as students have engaged in discussions in their other classes and even their homes and communities.
