Odyssey, a language assistant program, provides participants with paid, professional work experience and gives them the opportunity to travel in Canada and work with students for nine months. Language assistants leave their home province to work in a community in another province.
Under the supervision of a teacher, language assistants plan and lead activities to motivate students to learn more about the English language. Language assistants share their culture and knowledge of their language and region through art, music, stories, local expressions and humour.
Language assistants are paid for 25 hours of work per week from early September until the end of May. In addition, assistants receive travel allowances to get to and from their host communities.
Odyssey participants must:
- be proficient in both oral and written English or French (depending on the target language in which they will work)
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (those studying in Canada on student visas are not eligible)
- have completed at least one full year of post-secondary studies, college or university within the last 10 years.
