Approved Teacher Education Programs

Teacher education programs at B.C. universities are one to two years long. Course work and practicum experience focuses on education, competence and professional conduct standards for educators in B.C.

Program Approval

The BC Teachers' Council reviews and approves teacher education programs at B.C. post-secondary institutions to ensure that they will produce graduates that meet the standards for educators in B.C.

To support the ongoing improvement of the review and approval process, the BC Teachers’ Council and the Association of British Columbia Deans of Education have established a teacher education program approval and review framework as a guide: 

Proposals for a new program or changes to an existing program may include the following elements:

  • Introduction/program history
  • Program mission statement
  • Program consultations process
  • Program goals/strengths
  • Course sequence & descriptions
  • Monthly sequence of classes
  • Full course syllabi
  • Admission requirements/withdrawals/appeals
  • Program delivery/class size & structure/practicum requirements
  • List of faculty & staff with credentials
  • Faculty scholarly research
  • Library resources review
  • Program review & evaluation
  • List of reference
  • Applicable appendixes
