Student Exchange and Mobility Award – Public Schools and Independent Schools

Deadline for 2017/18 competition: November 30, 2017

The Student Exchange and Mobility Awards support B.C. students on exchange or mobility activities to foster the development of intercultural skills and knowledge, and strengthen relationships with foreign partners. Increasing the intercultural competence of B.C. students also promotes a more welcoming environment for international students.

For the 2017/18 administration, additional countries of eligibility have been added. Please see the Eligible Countries description below.

There are 20-40 awards available, with award values of between $5,000 and $10,000.

There are different application processes for public and independent school student groups (See below).

Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria must be met to be eligible to apply for the Student Exchange and Mobility Award: 

  • be organized and sanctioned by a B.C. public school or independent school, serving any range between Grade 8 and Grade 12;
  • be destined for a country included in the Eligible Country Categories (below);
  • have a minimum of five (5) B.C. students participating (there is no student maximum);
  • have a minimum duration of one (1) week in the eligible country; and
  • be supported by the public school and school district, or by the independent school.
Eligible Country Categories
a) MOU Partners  China, France, Italy, Japan, Spain
b) Recent MOU-Signing Partner Colombia
c) Other

Definition: Countries that are not traditionally strong sources of international students studying in B.C., or countries in which school-to-school relationships are less common.

Purpose: Engaging with these countries contributes to diversity for international education programs, fosters new relationships for B.C. school districts, and increases opportunities for B.C. students to develop their intercultural skills and diversity awareness.

Application Process: Applicants interested in applying under the “other” category are required to provide a one (1) paragraph justification for how the destination country aligns with the intended purpose (above).

NOTE: activity may already have occurred at the time of application. Funds can be applied to eligible student airfare, transfers and accommodation expenses planned to occur between August 15, 2017 and July 31, 2018.

Application Process for Public School Districts

  • The trip leaders at the school level (e.g., teacher or counsellor) are responsible for completing applications for Student Exchange and Mobility Awards.
  • Applications from public schools must have the support of both the school principal and the district head of international education. 
  • Applications from public schools must be sent from the school district head of international to the British Columbia Council for International Education (BCCIE) for the application to be eligible.

Application Process for Independent Schools

  • Applications from independent schools must have the support of the school principal.
  • Applications from independent schools must be sent from the principal or the activity leader to the BCCIE.
