Encouraging Students to Challenge themselves: the DELF scolaire

French Immersion, District-level initiative, Metro Vancouver Region, 2016-2017

At our two dual-track French Immersion secondary schools, teachers encourage their grade 11 and 12 students to register for one of the DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) scolaire exams offered in our District through the Surrey DELF Centre. Students pay on-line through our Continuing Education registration website. They pay only what the Surrey DELF Centre charges our District to administer and mark these exams. Our District covers all other costs incurred, such as oral exam examiners, invigilators, and materials required. By keeping the registration fee low (A1 & A2 = $25, B1 & B2 = $30), we hope to encourage as many of our senior French Immersion students as possible to write the DELF exam.

This has proven to be a successful initiative because our participation rates have grown steadily. We also feel that the offer to write DELF scolaire exams at a reduced rate is a motivating factor to stay in French Immersion at the secondary level. We will track the retention rate at our two dual-track French Immersion secondary schools as evidence of success with this initiative. Another indicator of its success is the fact that parents are becoming knowledgeable about the DELF scolaire exams and encouraging their children to register for them.
