A Storied Experience: Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling
French Immersion, Core French, District-level initiative, Metro Vancouver Region, 2017-2018
Late French Immersion teachers as well as the secondary Core French teachers have begun to use Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) approaches. TPRS is an input-based approach to teaching the French language that focuses on the systematic instruction of vocabulary in a highly comprehensible, personalized and contextualized manner. Teachers used the Innovation Grant structure of our school district to collaboratively learn and explore the TPRS approaches and then begun to implement, reflect and share their learning journey with others.
TPRS has been well-received by teachers, students and parents. The feedback we've received mentions that it is a more holistic approach to learning French and allows teachers to better address a broader range of style of learners. Students have been keen on learning and are excited about their language acquisition. Overall student listening comprehension, vocabulary development and engagement with learning has improved dramatically.
