May 25, 2020

Statistics Canada’s survey of environmental goods and services provides revenue, international trade and employment data pertaining to environmental and clean technology industries by region.

Revenues of British Columbia's exporters of environmental goods and services were over $1.1 billion in 2018, a 53.2% increase from 2017. Around 45.0% of revenues were received from exports to the United States, while goods represented 94.2% of total revenues. While British Columbia’s exports revenues grew, nationally revenues fell by 3.7% in 2018 compared to the previous year.

In 2018, there were 15,549 people in British Columbia employed in environmental and clean technology industries. Over one third (37.4%) of these employees worked in the waste management industry. Employment in environmental industries has grown rapidly in the last few years. Between 2015 and 2018, jobs in environmental industries more than doubled (+117.2%). Waste management industries added 550 jobs in this period (+10.4%), while jobs outside of waste management more than quintupled (413.9%), going from 1,894 in 2015 to 9,733 in 2018. The trend is similar in Canada as a whole, where jobs in environmental industries almost doubled (+99.7%) between 2015 and 2018, with industries other than waste management leading overall growth, more than tripling (253.6%) in the period compared to growth of 5.7% for waste management industries.
