Issue 20-21: Charitable Giving
February 14, 2020
Approximately 683,150 British Columbian taxpayers made a charitable donation during the 2018 tax year, a 0.7% decrease over the previous year. This accounts for roughly 18% of B.C.’s total number of tax filers, only slightly below the national average (19%). Manitoban tax filers had the highest rate of charitable donation (22%), followed by those in P.E.I. and Ontario (each 20%).
Charitable donations claimed by British Columbians totalled nearly $1.8 billion in 2018, unchanged from 2017. Among those making donations, the median gift was $470, well above the median donation at the Canadian level ($310). Nunavut ($540) and Alberta ($480) posted the highest median donation levels among the nation’s regions.
