Issue 20-114: Tourism Room Revenues 2019

June 18, 2020

Room revenues rose in 2019 compared to 2018 in every community in British Columbia except for Campbell River (-6.5%). As a result, all six tourism regions also reported annual revenue increases in 2019. The average number of properties covered by the municipal and regional district tax (MRDT) likewise grew in all but one of the provincial tourism regions.

The room revenue estimates are based on the MRDT of participating communities. Data are based on administrative files that are subject to updates, so it is considered preliminary and subject to revision. Participation in the MRDT is optional and as such, not all communities are included, and the regional totals are summations of participating communities only. Because communities may impose the tax or opt out of the program at any given time, changes from month to month may reflect the rate of growth in the number of properties in a region, or that existing properties are newly or no longer subject to the tax. Room revenue figures should be analysed with these caveats in mind.
