Issue 19-97 Manufacturing Sales
June 18, 2019
B.C. manufacturing sales (seasonally adjusted) were up 1.8% in April, driven mostly by the furniture (+11.5%), electrical equipment (+8.6%), food (+2.9%) and primary metal (+2.4%) industries. Declines in shipments among manufacturers in other large sectors, such as fabricated metal (-1.0%), wood (-1.1%), paper (-1.1%), and machinery (-6.1%), moderated the overall increase.
Canadian sales of manufactured goods stalled (-0.6%) in April, pulled down by decreased sales in the transportation equipment (-6.7%) and primary metal (-5.3%) industries. Manufacturing sales were down in five provinces, including Quebec (-1.7%) and Ontario (-2.1%). Meanwhile, the largest provincial gains in dollar terms were seen in Alberta (+4.6%) and Saskatchewan (+6.5%).
