Issue 19-31 Visitor Entries

February 21, 2019

B.C. received nearly 6.1 million international tourists from abroad in 2018, the highest number on record and up a notable 6.4% from 2017. Growth in numbers of tourists from the United States (+7.1%) outpaced the increase from overseas countries (+5.2%).

The number of non-resident travellers entering Canada via B.C. borders increased 4.5% to about 8.3 million in 2018. Accounting for nearly 75% of the total visitor entries through B.C. last year, entries from the U.S. climbed 4.1%.

British Columbia welcomed a record 2.2 million overseas travellers (from countries other than the U.S.) in 2018, up 5.5% from 2017. Last year saw 5.8% more visitors from Asia, the largest overseas market for B.C., than in 2017. The province saw a similar increase in the number of European visitors (+6.6%), and also welcomed considerably more travellers from Africa (+7.0%) and South America (+56.8%).

Note: international tourists are those making overnight trips, whereas travellers include both same-day and overnight visits. The majority of same-day trips involve Canadian or US residents making trips by car across the Canada-US border.
