Issue 19-24 Charitable Donations

Approximately 687,620 British Columbian taxpayers made a charitable donation during the 2017 tax year, a slight (-0.2%) decrease over the previous year. This accounts for roughly 19% of B.C.’s total number of taxfilers, only slightly below the national average (20%). Manitoban taxfilers had the highest rate of charitable donation (23%), followed by those in P.E.I. (21%).
Charitable donations claimed by British Columbians totalled $1.8 billion in 2017. This was a hefty 18.9% higher than 2016, and was the largest increase in the country. Among those making donations, the median gift was $460, well above the median donation at the Canadian level ($300). Nunavut ($560) and Alberta ($480) posted the highest median donation levels among the nation’s regions.
