Issue 19-177 Building Permits

November 15, 2019

The value of building permits issued by B.C. municipalities was up 3.4% (seasonally adjusted) in September. The increase was due entirely to a jump in the value of permits for the non-residential (+63.4) sector, as residential projects dipped 17.2%. A hefty 78.5% decrease in the value of permits in Abbotsford-Mission was nearly enough to offset boosts recorded in Vancouver (+1.9%), where most building activity occurs, Victoria (+12.6%) and Kelowna (+31.8%).

Nationally, permits were down 6.5%, with decreases in other provinces ranging from -7.2% in Ontario to -25.5% in P.E.I. Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador (+44.4%) posted the most notable increase in September.
