Issue 19-118 Retail Sales

July 19, 2019

Sales by retailers in the province slipped 0.2% (seasonally adjusted) in May, duplicating the 0.2% decrease recorded in the previous month.

Retailers in many parts of the country did not fare particularly well in May. Sales were off in eight provinces, most notably in Alberta (-1.7%) and parts of Atlantic Canada. Meanwhile, sales boosts in the nation’s two largest provinces (+0.5% in Ontario and +0.9% in Quebec) offset most of the decline, such that Canadian sales were down just 0.1% in May.
