Issue 18-70 Non-residential Building Investment

Investment in non-residential building construction in B.C. increased by 3.8% (seasonally adjusted) in the first quarter of 2018. The increase was widespread across all sectors, led by spending on new industrial (+12.3%), and institutional (+4.9%) buildings.

Among B.C.’s Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) only Victoria (‑4.5%) saw a decrease in non-residential investment in the first quarter of 2018. Non-residential building construction activity in Abbotsford-Mission (+26.7%) posted the largest percentage increase among CMAs in the quarter.

Nationally, non-residential construction expenditures grew 3.1% in the first quarter. Investment in new non-residential building projects was up in nine provinces, led by Ontario (+5.3%). Notable increases were observed in Nova Scotia (+6.8%) and New Brunswick (+5.7%).
