Issue 18-53: Wholesale Sales

Sales by wholesalers (seasonally adjusted) in British Columbia went up in January to reach $6.7 billion, a 1.4% increase compared to the previous month. The monthly gain was led by motor vehicle and parts (+7.2%), miscellaneous (+6.1%) and machinery, equipment and supplies (+4.5%) wholesales. Personal and household goods wholesales saw the largest decrease in the month (‑3.9%).

Nationally, the value of sales by wholesalers went up slightly (+0.1%) in January compared to the previous month. Four of the seven industry subsectors and six provinces reported higher sales for the month. Among provinces, Prince Edward Island (+2.8%), New Brunswick (+2.6%) and Manitoba (+1.6%) saw the largest percentage increases in January. Meanwhile Newfoundland and Labrador (‑6.4%) and Saskatchewan (‑3.3%) saw the largest declines in wholesale trade for the month.
