Issue 18-180 Non-residential Building Investment

Investment in non-residential building construction in B.C. was up (+4.0%, seasonally adjusted) in the third quarter. Spending on new buildings declined in the industrial (-2.5%) sector, but increased in the institutional (+1.2%) and commercial (+6.6%) sectors. Non-residential building construction activity strengthened in Vancouver (+3.4% to $1.1 billion), Victoria (+9.1`% to $132 million), Kelowna (+9.4% to $77 million) and Abbotsford-Mission (+11.6% to $59 million).

Nationally, non-residential construction expenditures were 0.9% higher in the third quarter than in the second quarter. Investment in new non-residential building projects was up in seven provinces, with B.C. recording the biggest increase in terms of dollar value.
