Issue 18-126 Non-residential Building Investment

Investment in non-residential building construction in B.C. increased a moderate 2.8% (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter of 2018. Spending on new buildings climbed in the industrial (+9.6%), commercial (+2.6%) and institutional (+0.2%) sectors. Non-residential building construction activity continued to rise in Vancouver (+2.8%), climbing to $1.0 billion. Investment in Abbotsford-Mission (+11.8% to $53 million) and Victoria (+1.0% to $121 million) also strengthened, but eased slightly in Kelowna (-0.4% to $70 million).
Nationally, non-residential construction expenditures climbed 1.4% in the second quarter. Investment in new non-residential building projects was up in six provinces, with Ontario recording the biggest increase in terms of dollar value.
