Issue 18-124 Manufacturing Sales

B.C. manufacturing sales (seasonally adjusted) went up by 3.2% in May compared to April. Higher sales of electrical equipment, appliance and components (+19.4%), wood products (+9.2%) and fabricated metal products (+5.2%) contributed most to the monthly gain. Notable decreases were observed in paper (-4.5%), non-metallic mineral product (‑3.2%) and primary metal manufacturing (-2.7%).

Nationally, sales of manufactured goods increased by 1.4% in May compared to the previous month, with sales of machinery (+8.9%), electrical equipment, appliance and components (+8.5%), and beverage and tobacco products (+6.5%) posting the largest gains for the month.

Manufacturing sales were up in seven of the provinces. The largest provincial increases were observed in Prince Edward Island (+8.4%) and Alberta (+7.9%). Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador (-29.7%), Nova Scotia (-0.4%), and Ontario (-0.2%) saw sales drop in the month.
