Issue 17-45: Gross Domestic Product (GDP)

Canadian real GDP by industry at basic prices (seasonally adjusted) increased 0.3% in December. During the last half of 2016, GDP expanded in every month except October.
The goods-producing industries rose 0.5% in December, as utilities (+3.4%), construction (+1.0%), agriculture, forestry, fishing & hunting (+0.6%), and manufacturing (+0.4%) all made gains. Utilities advanced (+3.4%) after three consecutive monthly declines as seasonal weather returned across Canada in December. The lone exception to the upward trend was mining, quarrying & oil and gas extraction (-0.4%).
The services-producing industries expanded 0.2%, led by wholesale trade (+1.2%) and professional, scientific & technical services (+0.5%). Retail trade (-1.0%) and accommodation & food services (-0.5%) were the only services-producing industries to see declines in December.
