Sales by wholesalers in British Columbia rose for the fourth consecutive month in August to reach $6.7 billion, a 0.7% increase (seasonally adjusted) compared to the previous month. The rise was led by higher sales of miscellaneous (+10.8%), and machinery, equipment and supplies (+7.6%) merchant wholesalers. Meanwhile, building material and supplies merchant wholesalers (‑9.4%) saw the largest decline for the month.
The increase in wholesale sales in British Columbia was the fifth largest among provinces, with Prince Edward Island (+5.4%) reporting the largest increase and New Brunswick (‑2.7%) the largest decline.
Nationally, the value of sales by wholesalers went up by 0.5% in August compared to July, with four of the seven industry subsectors reporting positive growth for the month. The largest increases were observed in the farm product (+6.7%), personal and household goods (+3.3%) and motor vehicle and parts (+2.0%) wholesalers.
