Issue 16-45: Manufacturing Sales

Manufacturers in British Columbia saw sales climb 0.7% (seasonally adjusted) in January, marking the fourth consecutive monthly increase. Sales advanced most notably for manufacturers of motor vehicles (+54.4%), non-metallic mineral (+5.9%) and furniture (+3.4%) products. Noteworthy gains were also made by producers of wood (+2.6%) and food (+2.4%) goods. Sales slowed for primary metal (-4.0%) and electrical equipment, appliance and component (-8.0%) product manufacturers among others.
Nationally, manufacturing sales jumped 2.3% with gains concentrated in the motor vehicle sector (+9.6%). Higher shipments were reported in eight provinces, including Ontario (+3.9%), Quebec (+1.7%) and B.C. (+0.7%). Meanwhile, sales were down sharply in Alberta (-3.8%) and Nova Scotia (-6.5%).
